Wood Carvings

African Mahogany wood locally known as 'Muhuhu' is used to carve most of the wood figurines, masks, animals, etc. The carvers of the Akamba tribe of Kenya produce most of these items. They Use only Chisels, and knives  on the wood to achieve the shape of the item they are carving. Then Sandpaper, and polish  is used to achieve the final smooth finish. No electrical tools are used.

Art of Kisii-Stone

The colorful decorative art of  Kisii-stone art is hand carved by the Kisii tribesmen of Kenya. The Stone is initially shaped with a chisel like tool called a 'panga'. The the piece is worked with knives and bladed tools. No electrical tools are used at all. Sandpaper is used to achieve the smooth finish. Colored dyes are then applied to create the unique colors and designs. Once hand dyed, the carving is engraved by the craftsmen using only a knife, to further embellish this beautiful work. No two pieces are exactly alike.
